An artist born and raised in Siberia, Lena Wolek's plastic work is influenced by the culture shock she experienced upon moving to the United States. She approaches this in a darkly comedic and satirical way: creating an enormous reusable bag out of single-use plastic bags and dragging it through a grocery store, creating a prom dress out of green trash bags, and a suit out of black ones after the presidential elections of 2008. American consumerism, it’s effects on the environment, along with a return to human creativity with unconventional methods/materials are all messages that come through in her work. Besides plastic, she commonly works with ceramics, ink and paper, and thrifted clothes. Lena loves cats and tending to her beautiful vegetable garden.
